초록

오늘날의 사회에서 전문용어의 양과 사용은 점점 증가해 가고 있다. 전문용어는 어떤 텍스트가 특정한 분야와 관련되어 있음을 가장 잘 드러내는 언어적 표현이다. 그리고, 국내에서는 아직 전문용어 연구가 미미한 실정이다. 따라서, 전문용어의 언어적 특성에 대한 정리가 이루어지지 않는다면 더 많은 정보의 적절한 표현과 검색, 이해에 많은 어려움이 따를 것이다.

본고에서는 전문용어와 관련한 여러 가지 문제점들이 전문용어의 일반적인 형태인 복합 용어를 형성하는 언어적 요소들의 결합 상에 있다는 점에 착안하여 분석적 방법을 통해 이에 대한 실증적인 관찰을 하였다.

분석의 자료로는, 전문언어 말뭉치와 전문용어 사전의 품질 등과 같은 현실적 문제를 고려하고 가능한 여러 분야의 용어를 관찰하기 위해 『표준국어대사전』(큰 규모의 일반어사전)의 전문어 목록을 이용하였다.

전문용어의 분석에는 말을 만드는 최소 형식인 형태소보다 의미있는 분석 단위를 필요하였다. 이에, 한 용어의 효율적인 분석 단위와 한 용어가 형성되는 언어적 단계를 고려한 단위로서 조어단위 를 설정하였다.

형성의 관점에서 볼 때, 전문용어 형성의 원리는 근본적으로 일반어 형성의 원리와 동일하다. 하지만 전문용어에는 일반어보다 복합 용어 특히 구 용어와 같은 용어적 단위가 더 잘 만들어진다. 이러한 용어적 표현의 단위는 전문용어가 일반어와 다른 여러 가지 특징을 갖게 한다.

용어 분석의 결과로서 조어단위 빈도 목록는 각 분야별 용어 표현의 과정에 어떤 어휘적 자원 이 이용되는지, 어떠한 것이 생산적으로 이용되는지 등에 대한정보를 준다.

조어단위를 형태·품사적 측면에서 보면, 명사류가 가장 두드러진 생산성을 갖고, 특히 우리말에서 여러 품사적 기능을 하는 서술성 명사는 복합 용어의 변이형태를 이루는 요소가 되기도 한다.

조어단위를 언어 차용의 측면에서 보면 한자어가 가장 두드러진 생산성을 갖다. 한자어 조어단위는 우리말 속에서 안정적인 상태에 있으면서 용어를 만들기도 하지만, 그렇지 못한 한자어 조어단위가 결합된 용어를 만들어내기도 한다. 또, 전문용어에는 순전한 외래어 용어뿐만 아니라, 우리말과 외래어가 결합하여 혼종 용어도 많음을 볼 수 있다. 이러한 용어들은 규범적인 언어 정책적 면에서 순화 대상이 되기도 한다.

무엇보다 사회과학 분야의 용어는 오늘날 일상 생활의 의사소통과 밀접히 관련되어 있다. 특히 이 분야를 구성하는 여러 작은 분야(경제, 법률, 정치 등)의 조어단위들이 여러 분야의 용어 형성의 요소로 공유되기도 한다. 이는 인접한 분야용어간의 분명한 경계를 긋는다는 것이 매우 어려운 것이며, 이는 전문용어와 일반언어간의 보이지 않는 경계 문제를 드러내는 것임을 의미한다.

전문용어는 특정 분야나 영역에서 쓰이는 개념이 할당된 언어적 표현의 단위이다. 따라서 용어는 그것이 쓰이는 영역의 언어적 특성을 드러낸다. 즉, 각 분야별 용어들은 전문용어의 대체적인 특징을 가질 뿐만 아니라 특정 분야에 따라 두드러진 특징을 가지고 있다. 특히, 경제 용어는 오늘날 전문용어 연구와 관련한 제기되는 여러 가지 문제점과 여러 가지 특성을 가장 잘 보여주고 있다.

In current society, the use and the quantity of terminology are increasing. Terms are linguistic expressions indicating that some texts are related to specific fields. Furthermore, in Korea, terminology work is still immature. At this time, if any work would not make clear of linguistic characteristics in terminology, it will be very difficult to express, understand and retrieval much more information appropriately.

In this thesis, having taken notice of the point that many problems, related to terminology, exist on the association of their linguistic elements forming a complex term which is usual form of terms, I’ve observed them empirically through the analytical method.

As for the time being, the high-quality terminology resources and the special language corpora are insufficient, the Data used in this thesis are the term lists of 『The Great Standard Korean Dictionary:2000』(General language dictionary which is of a big scale).

In analysing the data(term lists), it requires more meaningful analysis unit than the morpheme which is the smallest thing to form a word. For that reason, I set up ‘ formational unit(FU)’ as a unit which is under consideration of the linguistic stage of creating a term as well as the efficient analysis unit of a term.

In the view of the formation, the rules of term formation are fundamentally the same with those of word formation. But, in terminology, complex terms especially phrasal terms are more frequently created than in General words. These terminological units result in the lexico-morphological characteristics of the terminology which are different from words in general language.

As the results of analysing terminology, the frequency list of formational units gives the informations such as about the lexical resources used in expressing the terms and about the formational units productively used in creating a term in each specific field.

From the viewpoint of Morphology and word class, among all of the formational units noun class has the most remarkable productivity and, especially the predicative common nouns which take various parts of speech roles in Korean langu age will be often the elements that make the variant forms of complex terms.

From the viewpoint of borrowing language, the FUs of Sino-Korean have the most remarkable productivity. Although Sino-Korean which stands as a stabilized status in Korean langu age makes a term, there are many terms that are associated with the FUs of Sino-Korean which are not in such a case. Also, in terminology, there are many hybrid terms as well as purely borrowed terms. These terms are often the targets of purifying Korean langu age in the stand of prescriptive language policy.

Above all, the terminology in the general social science field is deeply related to the communication in our everyday lives. Especially, the formational units of the smaller fields(e.g. economics, law, politics, etc.) consisting of the social science field are often commonly shared as the elements of the term formation in those fields. This means that it is very difficult to draw a boundary on the terminology of neighbored domains, and this shows the problems of the invisible boundary between General language and Special language.

Terms are the verbal expressions which are assigned to concepts used in the specific-fields or domains. Therefore, terminology shows the linguistic characteristics in its domain. In other words, the terminology of each specific-field has not only the common characteristics of all of the terminology but also the remarkable characteristics according to the specific-field. Especially, terminology in economics field is typically revealing various problems and various characteristics that are related to terminology works.

국어사전의 전문용어에 관한 연구

이 글에서는 국어사전에서의 전문용어 표제어로 일반인들이 일상 생활에서 접할 수 있는 전문용어들을 그 대상으로 삼았다. 이를 위한 국어사전의 표제어 선정 기준으로 고등학교 교과서와 대학 교재에 나오는 전문용어를 제안하고, 이를 보완하기 위해 교과서와 각 전문 영역을 포함하는 말뭉치를 설계, 구축하여 표제어 선정에 이용할 필요성을 제기하였다. 국어사전에서의 어휘는 일반용어의 의미로 활발히 사용되는 것과, 보다 전문용어로 사용되는 경우, 그리고 일반용어와 전문용어의 의미로 모두 사용되는 어휘들로 나누어 기술할 것을 제안하였다. 전문용어의 영역을 분류하는 것과 관련해서는 기존 사전들의 문제점을 보완하여 보다 효과적으로 영역을 분류하고 제시할 수 있는 하나의 방안을 제시하였다. 이와 더불어 전문가들의 검수를 통한 전문용어의 객관적인 검증 과정도 필요하다는 것을 제안하였다. 이 글은 전문용어 사전이 아닌 국어사전의 입장에서 다루어야 할 전문용어의 범위와 그에 맞는 표제어 선정 및 기술 방법을 제시함으로써 일반인들이 국어사전을 통해 일상 생활 속에서 접하는 전문용어들에 보다 쉽게 접근하고 이해할 수 있도록 하는 데 목적이 있다.

As a guideline to selecting entry in the dictionaries, the terminology in the high school and college level textbooks were proposed for review. It is suggested that a corpus be designed and built for guiding selection of entry in all technical areas and textbooks. The vocabulary in the dictionaries should be sectioned into more readily used common words, technical words and the words with both common and technical meanings. In sorting areas of terminologies, the problems of current dictionaries are improved and a more effective sorting solution is suggested. In addition, an objective validation process with review by experts on technical terms is suggested. The objective of this study is to suggest an appropriate entry selection and description that is in accordance with proper boun daries of terminologies for Korean-Korean dictionaries, not technical dicitionaries, to be more easily accessible and understandable to the general users in looking up terminologies.
