아마존 프라임 비디오 이용 후기
아마존 프라임 비디오를 반년 가까이 사용하다가 얼마 전에 해지했다. <더 보이즈> 리뷰와 함께 짤막하게 사용 후기를 적기는 했으나, 오랜 기간 제대로 사용하고 나니 장단점이 더욱더 와닿아서 따로 사용 후기를 작성해본다. 엄밀히 말하면 아마존 프라임 비디오가 정식으로 국내에 론칭된 것은 아니긴 하지만, 국내에서 사용 가능하기도 하고 얼마 전부터는 홈페이지와 어플에 한글 서비스도 지원을 시작하였기 때문에 참고를 해도 크게 무리는 없을 것 같다.

장점 1) 가격
아마존 프라임 비디오는 첫결제 이후 2주 무료, 그리고 6개월 간 한화로 3500원 정도에 해당하는 금액으로 사용 가능하다. 아직까지 넷플릭스나 왓챠 플레이처럼 다양한 요금제에 따른 차별화된 서비스나 멀티 계정을 사용할 수 있는 기능은 없지만, 월 3500원이라는 가격은 혼자서 사용하기에도 크게 무리 없는 가격이다. 국내 서비스 시작 이후 어떻게 변화될지는 모르겠지만 현재까지는 꽤나 메리트 있는 가격.
6개월 이후에는 5500원으로 결제가 되니 참고 하시길. 일정 기간이 지나면 다시 리셋되어 다시 2주 무료와 6개월 3500원 혜택을 누릴 수 있는지는 잘 모르겠음.
장점 2) 화질
요금제에 따라 차별화된 화질 서비스를 제공하는 넷플릭스/왓챠 플레이와 달리, 아마존 프라임 비디오는 기본요금만으로도 고화질 서비스를 누릴 수 있다. 작품 스트리밍을 시작하면 화면 하단에 현재 화질이 떠서 쉽게 알 수 있는 것도 좋음. 프리미엄 요금제를 도입했음에도 PC/모바일에서는 여전히 엉망인 화질을 제공하는 왓챠 플레이에 비교하면 큰 장점 중 하나. 최신 영화는 그렇다 치고, 고전 영화들도 HD 1080p로 편하게 볼 수 있어서 좋음.
장점 3) 다운로드
자사 콘텐츠가 아니면 다운로드에 제한이 걸리기도 하는 넷플릭스나 좀 볼만한 작품들은 죄다 다운로드가 안 되는 왓챠 플레이에 비해 다운로드가 자유로운 점도 좋다. 제약이 있는 작품도 있는지는 모르겠지만, 이제까지 시청한 작품 중에서 다운로드하여서 보는데 문제가 있었던 작품은 없었음. 대신 고화질 다운로드로 설정을 해도 HD 1080p로는 다운이 안 되고 그냥 HD로 받아졌던 것으로 기억. 당연히 보는 데는 전혀 지장 없음.
장점 4) X-ray 기능
아마존 프라임 비디오를 사용하면서 가장 마음에 들었던 기능. 재생 중에 화면에 마우스를 갖다 대거나 터치를 하면 현재 화면 속 배우들의 이름, 캐릭터 이름, 트리비아나 OST 등 정보가 뜬다. IMDb와 연동되어 있는 기능이라 IMDb 사이트의 정보가 제공된다. 작품을 감상하면서 정보들을 바로바로 알 수 있는 점이 매우 마음에 들었는데, 특히 단역 배우들이나 OST에 대한 정보를 쉽게 얻을 수 있어서 좋았음. IMDb가 해외 사이트라 국내 서비스를 시작하면 어떻게 될지 모르겠는데, 이왕이면 유지했으면 하는 기능. 옛날 영화 중에서는 가끔 정보가 뜨지 않는 경우가 있기도 함.
장점 5) 전용 어플리케이션
윈도우 10 기준으로 앱스토어에서 아마존 프라임 비디오 전용 어플리케이션이 추가되었다. 이전에 구독할 때는 없었던 것을 보면 최근에 추가된 것 같은데, 넷플릭스처럼 전용 어플을 사용하니 웹페이지로 볼 때보단 훨씬 편리하긴 함. 다운로드도 수월하다.
단점 1) 자막
자막에 나름 신경을 쓴다고 하는 넷플릭스나 왓챠 플레이에도 자막 문제가 늘 끊이지 않지만, 아마존 프라임 비디오의 자막 수준은 그냥 재난 그 자체다. 놀랍게도 거의 모든 콘텐츠(특히 시트콤)에서 되/돼 구분을 아예 못하는데 이건 아주 양반일 정도로 전반적으로 엉망진창이다. 한 에피소드 안에서도 존댓말과 반말을 섞어서 하는 인물들은 그렇다 치고, 맞춤법이 너무 심각할 정도로 엉망이라 관람에 지장이 있을 정도다. 그리고 싱크가 안 맞는 작품들이 굉장히 많은데, 스트리밍 서비스들은 싱크를 수정 못해서 그냥 참고 봐야 한다.
어느 정도로 자막이 엉망인지 예를 들자면 <팍스 앤 레크레이션> 시즌 4에서는 ‘크리스, 잘됐지만 그런 예기 안해도 되요’라는 맞춤법과 띄어쓰기를 죄다 틀린 번역으로 혈압을 오르게 하고, <사인필드> 시즌 2에서는 ‘센트럴 파크’를 ‘중앙 공원’이라고 그냥 직독 직해하여 헛웃음을 자아낸다.
특히 <팍스 앤 레크레이션>은 시즌 3을 기점으로 자막이 너무 처참할 지경이라 참다못해 아마존 프라임 비디오 고객 센터에 컴플레인 메일을 영어로 보내기도 했다. 서비스를 체크하겠다는 형식적인 답장이 오긴 했지만, 지금 하는 걸로 봐서는 앞으로도 크게 다르진 않을 것 같다. 그 이유는 황석희 번역가의 페이스북 페이지의 글에서 찾아볼 수 있는데, 아마존 프라임 비디오는 넷플릭스와 달리 한국어 자막 서비스에 전혀 신경을 쓰지 않아 보이기 때문이다. 국내 베테랑 번역가들이 아닌 해외 번역 업체와 일하는 해외 거주자나 유학생 혹은 외국인에게 일감을 줘서 진행 중이라고 하는데, 이 글을 보고 나니 왜 자막들이 하나같이 맞춤법도 틀리고 어휘나 표현들이 자연스럽지 않은지 알 수 있었다. 국내 정식 론칭 이후에 이런 문제들을 어떻게 해결할지 지켜볼 일이다.
*추가) 2020년 12월 <사인필드>가 다시 업로드된 것을 보고 아마존 프라임 비디오를 재구독했는데, 자막 퀄리티가 이전보다 훨씬 나아진 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이전처럼 비문이나 맞춤법이 틀린 부분, 싱크가 안 맞는 부분이 현저하게 줄어들었고 번역도 꽤 자연스러워짐. 아마 자막을 새로 입히거나 대대적으로 수정을 한 것 같은데 꽤 만족스럽다. 다른 콘텐츠들도 천천히 시청하면서 전반적인 자막 퀄리티를 다시 확인해볼 예정.
단점 2) 콘텐츠 부족
넷플릭스/왓챠 플레이에 비교하는 게 실례일 정도로, 아마존 프라임 비디오에서 국내에 제공 중인 콘텐츠는 굉장히 빈약하다. VPN을 우회하여 미국 서버로 이용하지 않는 이상 국내 콘텐츠는 거의 볼 게 없다. 그나마 얼마 전까지 <30 락>, <팍스 앤 레크레이션>, <사인필드> 등 국내에 서비스되지 않는 시트콤들이 제공되었지만 1월 30일부로 서비스가 중단됐다(개인적으로도 이런 시트콤들 때문에 서비스를 이용했던 거라 바로 구독을 취소하기도 했다). 몇몇 국내에서 정식 루트로 찾기 힘든 영화들이 있기는 하나, 소수에 불과하다. 최근에 시트콤들과 함께 영화들도 대거 서비스가 중단되면서 남은 건 자막 없는 인도 영화들 뿐이다. 국내 서비스를 앞두고 단장 중인지 어떤지는 모르겠지만, 현재로는 아마존 프라임 비디오엔 볼만한 작품들이 갖춰져 있지 않다.
단점 3) 제멋대로인 콘텐츠
서비스되는 작품들이 거의 없기도 하지만, 뭔가 좀 중구난방이다. 영상은 서비스되지만 자막은 없는 콘텐츠들이 수두룩하고, 분명 한글 자막이 없다고 소개된 작품임에도 멀쩡하게 자막이 나오는 경우도 있다. 그리고 한글 자막은 없지만 한글 더빙만 있는 작품도 있고, 자막은 나오지만 띄어쓰기 없이 죄다 붙여 쓴 자막이 나오는 작품도 있다. 쉽게 말해서 제대로 검수를 안 하는 것 같다. 이용자가 적으니 그냥 서비스하는 것일 수도 있고. 덕분에 볼만한 작품들은 더욱 줄어든다.
단점 4) 광고
타사 스트리밍 서비스와 달리 아마존 프라임 비디오는 모바일로 어플을 사용할 때, 그리고 PC로 작품을 감상할 때 자사 오리지널 콘텐츠 광고가 나온다. 크게 거슬리는 수준은 아니지만 감상할 때마다 매번 광고를 끄는 것도 귀찮다. 그리고 자사 콘텐츠가 몇 개 없는지라 몇몇 인기 콘텐츠만 주구장창 나온다. 그래서 뭔가 더 라인업이 더 빈약하고 부실해 보인다.
여기까지 아마존 프라임 비디오를 반년 간 사용하면서 느낀 여러 장단점들을 나열해봤는데, 앞으로 국내에 정식으로 서비스가 론칭되면 분명 바뀔 점들이 많기는 하다. 넷플릭스와 왓챠 플레이, 그리고 웨이브 등 다양한 서비스가 국내에서 경쟁하고 있는 현재, 아마존 프라임 비디오가 어떻게 자신들만의 장점을 어필하여 정착할 수 있을지 지켜보는 것도 재밌을 것이라고 생각한다.

Amazon Prime Video, or simply Prime Video, is an American subscription video on-demand over-the-top streaming and rental service of Amazon offered as a standalone service or as part of Amazon’s Prime subscription. The service primarily distributes films and television series produced by Amazon Studios and MGM Holdings or licensed to Amazon, as Amazon Originals, with the service also hosting content from other providers, content add-ons, live sporting events, and video rental and purchasing services.
Operating worldwide, the service may require a full Prime subscription to be accessed. In countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany, the service can be accessed without a full Prime subscription,[3] whereas in Australia, Canada, France, India, Turkey, and Italy, it can only be accessed through a dedicated website. Prime Video additionally offers a content add-on service in the form of channels, called Amazon Channels, or Prime Video Channels, which allow users to subscribe to additional video subscription services from other content providers within Prime Video.[4]
Launched on September 7, 2006, as Amazon Unbox in the United States, the service grew with an expanding library, and added the Prime Video membership upon the development of the Prime subscription. It was then renamed as Amazon Instant Video on Demand. After acquiring the UK-based streaming and DVD-by-mail service LoveFilm in 2011,[5] Prime Video was added to the Prime subscription in the United Kingdom, Germany and Austria in 2014,[6][7] available on a monthly subscription of £/€7.99 per month, continuing the plan of LoveFilm Instant.[8] The service was previously available in Norway, Denmark, and Sweden in 2012, but was discontinued in 2013.[9] On April 18, 2016, Amazon split Prime Video from Amazon Prime in the US for $8.99 per month.[10]
On December 14, 2016, Prime Video launched worldwide (except for Mainland China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia[1] and Syria) expanding its reach beyond the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, and Japan. Among the new territories, the service was included with Prime in Belgium, Brazil, Canada, France, India, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Turkey and Spain, while for all other countries, it was made available for a monthly promotional price of $/€2.99 per month for the first six months and $/€5.99 per month thereafter.[11]

The service debuted on September 7, 2006, as Amazon Unbox in the United States.[12] On September 4, 2008, the service was renamed Amazon Video on Demand.[13][14] As of August 2014 the service is no longer available for downloading purchased instant videos. On February 22, 2011, the service rebranded as Amazon Instant Video and added access to 5,000 movies and TV shows for Amazon Prime members.[15][16] On February 8, 2012, Amazon signed a deal with Viacom to add shows from MTV, Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, TV Land, VH1, CMT, Spike, BET and Logo TV to Prime Instant Video.[17] On September 4, 2012, Amazon signed a deal with pay-TV channel Epix to feature movies on their streaming service, in a move to rival their competitor Netflix.[18] Additionally, in November 2013, Amazon premiered the comedies Alpha House and Betas, which are original series available exclusively online via the Prime Instant Video service. Amazon offered the first three episodes of both series at once for free, with each subsequent episode released weekly thereafter for Prime members.[19]
In February 2014, Amazon announced that the streaming service of its UK subsidiary LoveFilm would be folded into the Instant Video service on February 26, 2014.[20][21] In January 2015, Transparent became the first show produced by Amazon Studios to win a major award and the first series from a streaming video service to win the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.[22]
In 2015, Amazon launched the Streaming Partners Program (now known as Amazon Channels), a platform allowing subscription-based third-party channels and streaming services to be offered to Amazon Prime subscribers through the Amazon Video platform. These services are separate from the Amazon Video offering, and must be purchased separately. The original launch in the U.S. included services such as Curiosity Stream, Lifetime Movie Club, AMC’s Shudder, Showtime, Starz, and others.[23][24] The service subsequently added other partners, such as HBO and Cinemax, Discovery Channel, Fandor, Noggin, PBS Kids, Seeso, Toku and Boomerang.[25]
On July 30, 2015, Amazon announced that they had hired Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May to produce an untitled motoring show for Amazon Prime Video that would later be named The Grand Tour. Neither Jeff Bezos nor Amazon.com had stated how much Clarkson, Hammond, or May are being paid to produce the programme via their production company W. Chump & Sons, but Jeff Bezos stated that the deal was “very expensive, but worth it”.[26] The budget for the show has not officially been announced, but Andy Wilman, the former executive producer of Top Gear stated that each episode would have a budget of around £4.5 million, nine times larger than Top Gear’s budget.[27] Also in July, Amazon announced plans to expand the service into India.[28]
In September 2015 the word “Instant” was dropped from its title in the US, and it was renamed simply Amazon Video.[29] In November 2016, the Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon was pursuing streaming rights to U.S. professional sports leagues to further differentiate the service.[30][31][32]
Amazon announced in November 2016 that it planned to stream The Grand Tour globally, which led to speculation over whether the full Prime Video service would begin a wider international rollout to compete with Netflix.[33][34] On December 14, 2016, Prime Video expanded into 200 additional countries.[35]
In January 2017, Amazon announced Anime Strike, an anime focused Amazon Channels service.[36] In May 2017, Amazon Channels expanded into Germany and the UK; in the UK, the company reached deals to offer channels from Discovery Communications (including Eurosport), and live/on-demand content from ITV.[24][37]
In April 2017, Amazon began to make sports-related content acquisitions, first acquiring non-exclusive rights to stream portions of the NFL’s Thursday Night Football games during the 2017 NFL season to Prime subscribers in a $50 million deal, replacing a previous deal with Twitter.[38] In August, Amazon acquired the British television rights to the ATP World Tour beginning 2019, replacing Sky Sports. The deal will run until 2023 and will exclusively show all masters 1000 events and 12 500 and 250 series tournaments. Amazon will be the third party pay TV provider for the ATP finals and starting in 2018 for Queens Club and Eastbourne tournaments.[39][40] The ATP announced a two-year deal in September for Amazon to stream the Next Generation ATP Finals.[41] In November it was announced that Amazon had acquired the British television rights to the US Open for five years from the 2018 edition, for a reported £30 million. Eurosport who owned the pan European rights extended their deal with the US Open but excluded the UK, which was ironic as Amazon had reached a deal with the broadcaster to stream their channels on their station.[42] The ATP additionally announced that Amazon in the US would screen the tennis channel, Tennis TV from 2018.[40]
On January 5, 2018, Amazon announced that Anime Strike and Heera (a second Channel devoted to Indian films and series) would be discontinued as separate services, and that their content would be merged into the main Prime Video library at no additional charge.[43]
In June 2018, it was announced that Amazon had secured the UK rights to broadcast 20 live Premier League football matches from the 2019–20 season on a three-year deal. This will be the first time that the league will be shown on a domestic live streaming service, as opposed to being shown exclusively on television.[44] The deal has since been extended for a further three years until the 2024–25 season.[45]
Amazon Studios owns global television adaptation rights to The Lord of the Rings, which will air on Prime Video.[46]
On March 18, 2021, Prime Video announced that they have renewed their deal to and will be the exclusive broadcaster of Thursday Night Football between the 2022 and 2033 seasons.[47] Because Prime Video is a subscription service, the NFL will require Amazon to have the games syndicated to over-the-air television stations in the local market of the teams.[48]
On May 17, 2021, parent company Amazon entered negotiations to acquire Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM).[49] On May 26, 2021, it was officially announced that they would acquire MGM for $8.45 billion, subject to regulatory approvals and other routine closing conditions; with the studio continuing to operate as a label alongside Amazon Studios and Amazon Prime Video.[50] The deal was closed after receiving all governmental approvals on March 17, 2022.[51] In July 2021, Amazon and Universal Pictures reached a multi-year deal to bring Universal’s films to Prime Video, as well as IMDb TV (soon Amazon Freevee). As part of the deal, titles from Universal’s library as well as future theatrical releases would become available on Amazon’s streaming services following their first pay window and four months after released on Peacock. The deal makes major franchises such as Fast & Furious, Jurassic Park and Bourne eligible to stream on Prime Video.[52] Most recently, Prime Video had signed a deal with Nigerian studio Anthill Studios.[53]
On February 9, 2022, Amazon signed a long-term deal with the Shepperton Studios for exclusive use of new production facilities.[54]
On July 1, 2022, Amazon announced a deal with UEFA Champions League football. Prime Video will air 17 games for the 2023-24 season in the United Kingdom.[55]
On July 31, 2022, it was announced that the service will expand to Southeast Asia, and be offered in Indonesia, Thailand and The Philippines. The offerings will include localized content, as well as localized interface and subtitles for non-local content.[56]

Prime Video is available worldwide (except for Mainland China, Iran, North Korea, Russia[1] and Syria).[11] Initially it was available only to residents of the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Germany and Austria.[57][58]
The service supports online streaming via web player,[59] as well as apps on Amazon Fire-branded devices, and supported third-party mobile devices, digital media players (particularly Roku), video game consoles, and smart TVs. An Android TV app is also available, which was initially exclusive to Sony Bravia smart TVs running Android TV, and Nvidia Shield.[60]
Amazon had historically withheld support for Apple TV and Google’s Chromecast platform. In October 2015, the company banned the sale of these devices on its online marketplace because they do not support the Prime Video ecosystem. This led to critics arguing that Amazon was displaying protectionism against devices that could be competitors to its own Fire TV products.[61][62][63] However, in December 2017, Amazon released an Apple TV app for Prime Video,[64] and announced in April 2019 that it would add Chromecast support to the Prime Video mobile app and perform a wider release of Prime Video’s Android TV app. This was delivered in July 2020[65] as part of concessions to restore access to YouTube on Fire TV devices after a related feud with Google.[66]

In some countries where Amazon Video is available and movies/television shows can be purchased or rented, Prime Video is offered on the local Amazon website (e.g. amazon.com, amazon.de, amazon.co.uk etc.).
Although a local Amazon website might be available, the full range of digital content services (e.g. Amazon Music, Amazon Video, Kindle Store) might not be available in that particular country (e.g. amazon.in, amazon.sg, amazon.com.tr etc.). Depending on the device, Amazon supports up to 4K (UHD) and high-dynamic-range (HDR) streaming. UHD/HDR rolled out with its original content.[69] Other titles support 1080p (HD) streaming with 5.1 Dolby Digital or Dolby Digital Plus audio, with Dolby Atmos coming soon to certain titles. For titles available for purchase (and not included in a customer’s Amazon Prime subscription), the HD option is often offered at an additional price.
On March 18, 2020, Thierry Breton, a European commissioner in charge of digital policy of the European Union urged streaming services including Amazon Prime Video to limit their services. The request came as a result of the prevention of Europe’s broadband networks from crashing as tens of millions of people started remote work due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The EU wanted the streaming platforms to offer only standard definition, rather than high-definition, programs and make users responsible for their data consumption.[70] On March 20, 2020, Amazon said that they have already begun the effort to reduce streaming bitrates while also maintaining a quality streaming, “We support the need for careful management of telecom services to ensure they can handle the increased internet demand with so many people now at home full-time due to COVID-19. Prime Video is working with local authorities and Internet Service Providers where needed to help mitigate any network congestion.”[71]

In April 2020, Amazon and Apple formed a deal that allowed Amazon to process in-app payments on the Prime Video app on iOS, without using Apple’s official in-app purchase mechanism. Apple’s official in-app purchase mechanism is used when a user does not have an existing Prime subscription.[72][73] This move was considered notable as most apps on the Apple App Store are not allowed to use their own payment processor; in-app transactions for digital content have to be handled by Apple. For Amazon accounts that are ineligible for Apple in-app purchases, a standard unavailable for purchase message is shown instead.
